An Earth Discharge Rod is a crucial high-voltage safety tool designed to eliminate residual, static, or induced electrical charges from de-energized electrical equipment, such as overhead lines, capacitors, and transformers, ensuring they are at zero potential before maintenance work begins. It consists of a highly insulated, lightweight Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) rod—often telescopic to allow for safe working distances—with a conductive copper or aluminum hook at the top and a flexible earthing cable at the base that is connected to a grounding point, such as a traction rail or earth mat. By providing a low-resistance path to the ground, the discharge rod protects personnel from accidental re-energization and electrocution, with many models offering voltage ratings ranging from 11kV up to 400kV or higher.
